ABWI Report for January 2017

AB WI Mac Carding Photo

Mac Carding was the speaker at WI's January meeting. She was brought up in Acton Bridge and is now the lock keeper at Dutton Lock. She gave a fascinating and illustrated talk on the history of the River Weaver. The illustrations showed the various stages of canalisation of the river as well as how important it was in its heyday in the transportation of salt downstream and coal and other commodities upstream. The renovation and closure of the swing bridge at Acton Bridge in the year 2000 finally put an end to any commercial traffic on the river. There are only pleasure boats that use it now.

Caroline Young presided at the meeting and gave the vote of thanks. Besides the meeting this month there was a trip to see the ballet 'Billy Elliot' at the theatre in Manchester. A large group visited the newly opened cinema in Northwich to see the film 'La La Land' and had a meal beforehand at a nearby restaurant. The book club met to discuss the book 'The Handmaid's Tale' by Margaret Atwood. The craft group have a new project which is to knit Trauma Teddies for the police to use when interviewing traumatised children. The walking group enjoyed a walk along part of the Whitegate Way.
